Applied research. Real-world outcomes.
We support applied research in small fruits, grapes, and specialty crops — funding work that directly addresses real production challenges across the Pacific Northwest.
Funding research that provides practical value to PNW growers.
We work in alignment with USDA-ARS and regional research partners to ensure funding supports the most pressing challenges facing small fruits and specialty crop production. Our funding is designed to connect research with real-world application. Rather than funding research in isolation, we support projects shaped by industry needs and aligned with regional priorities. This ensures research delivers practical value to growers across the Pacific Northwest.
How Funding Works
Accepting berry and grape research projects in the Pacific Northwest.
Our annual funding cycle, known as "Request for Applications" or "Request for Proposals", provides funding to address the needs and advancement of agriculture across the Pacific Northwest. Eligible applicants can apply for funding every year or for up to three years. The maximum funding you can receive each year is $70,000, and some multi-year projects may receive funding for more than one year. The funds are typically released in the first year of the project.

Proposals can be multi-year projects (up to three years in duration) but funding is ONLY available on a year-by-year basis.
Our funding cycle runs from November – January of every year. Dates are announced closer to the opening of our funding portal.
Why Work With NCSFR
NCSFR funding does more than support a project — it connects your research to an industry, a region, and a communication network.
Industry Connection
Your research addresses priorities that the industry itself has identified — making your work more relevant and more likely to be adopted by growers across the region.
Communication Support
NCSFR helps communicate your findings through fact sheets, conference presentations, and other channels — so the research reaches the people who can use it.
Regional Visibility
Your work enters the NCSFR project library and is presented at the annual conference — giving it visibility across the Pacific Northwest small fruits research community.
Funding Through the Collaboration Platform
