The decreases in yield can be attributed to rain during the bloom period in 1998 and winter damage and increased disease pressure in 1999. There were also no differences among treatments in any of the three years in fruiting cane number, primocane number, or cane diameter. Fruit size tended to be smallest in the untreated control in 1997 and 98. There were no differences in fruit size among treatments in 1999. In 1997 there were significantly more broken primocanes after harvest in the Goal and control plots. In 1998 the Goal plots had significantly more kinked primocanes than any of the CE plots. Both CE and Goal gave a better burn on the primocanes with WA-100 (used in 1997) or Freeway (used in 1999) as the surfactant than R-11 (used in 1998). Although CE was superior to Goal in quality of primocane burn, Goal provided better weed control than CE, presumably due to its residual effect in the soil. Scythe, applied twice at a concentration of 5.33% in unreplicated plots of Marion blackberry and boysenberry did not provide an adequate burn in either variety in 1998. Therefore, Scythe was not included in the 1999 trial.
